When I Dream

It’s amazing how the sun will rise again and again

Waking us from the dreams that we desperately claim as our reality.

Reminding us that it doesn’t stop for us,

Not even if we scream, pleading with tears in our eyes.

I was made to love and be loved in an unapologetic rhythm,

With passion that kills and reassurance that fulfills

And a life free from pretending to be fine,

Wearing a smile that doesn’t reach my eyes.

But isn’t it funny how the strongest battles are the ones against ourselves?

Resurfacing like a villain to dance on the ceiling,

And just when I thought I was so close to healing,

It laughs in my face, reminding me that you can’t erase something that’s become a part of you.

A ship that survives one storm is still lost at sea,

But I don’t want to be.
