Let’s Talk About Bruno

Based on social media (basically my TikTok for you page), Encanto is the latest and greatest Disney film to be released late last year. The music is widely accepted and used multiple times on my FYP. It’s catchy and I won’t be surprised if it wins an award for best Soundtrack or animation.

For anyone who doesn’t know about this film, (which I highly doubt). Abuela Alma and her late Husband Abuela Pedro run away from the conflict of the Colombian Civil war but Pedro ends up sacrificing himself. Alma receives a candle that grants powers and makes her home and gifts/powers for her family away from the war. Mirabel, the main character, doesn't receive a gift. She then learns that she could destroy the home and tries to save her home and family.

But my main reason for this article is not about the production and story of the film. I want to talk about Bruno. He is one of the triplets from Abuela Alma. His gift is to see the future. My problem with the film is that the village treats Bruno like garbage for his gift. In the film, you can’t control what gift you get. In the town, if it's useful then you will be liked in the village. For example, Luisa gets the power of super-strength. This is useful to the village for heavy lifting around the town. Knowing the future could be good, so you can get ready for it, you can either change it or let it happen. The village doesn’t like what Bruno tells them about their future.

There is a whole song in the film called “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”. This song has become viral out of all the other songs. But in the song, his sister, Pepa and her husband sing this,

Bruno says, "It looks like rain"

[Félix:]

Why did he tell us?

[Pepa:]

In doing so, he floods my brain

[Félix:]

Abuela get the umbrellas

[Pepa:]

Married in a hurricane

[Félix:]

What a joyous day but anyway

Pepa gets mad that Bruno told her and Felix that it would rain on their wedding day. Bruno just told them the weather. Bruno could have been worried for them and maybe told them to have the wedding another day so it isn’t ruined by the rain. He tells some villagers that her goldfish would die, a man would go bald, and another would gain some weight.

Bruno even knows about the future of the house. He tells the future of the house to Mirabel. It says again that Mirabel could be the cause of the house falling apart. The house does in fact fall apart and everyone starts to lose their powers because the candle blows out. Mirabel runs away. Abuela Alma and Mirabel hash out their differences. Bruno crashes in their moment and tries to take the blame for Mirabel.

It shows in the film that Bruno cares for his family because he tries to take the blame for the gift he provided Mirabel. He even lives inside the walls of the house after he was shunned away but he doesn’t want to be far away from his family. I believe that the family doesn’t deserve Bruno because with my opinion if I was treated like this I would have left the whole village and not looked back. It shows that people don’t like to know the truth. They would rather let the future that is ahead of them not be known to them. Bruno can’t escape the fact that he knows the future, it's his gift. It shows from the film that the village and family only cares if these gifts are going to be useful or unique for the village and Bruno was not in their eyes.
